The FIVE TOWNS FENCERS CLUB is moving to 15 Prospect Avenue, Hewlett,NY
on August 26, 2010

No not Fencing as in the picket or PVC kind  - Fencing as in Epee Foil or Sabre

Five years after opening his club on Broadway in Woodmere Olympic Fencer Jonathan Tiomkin is expanding to larger facilities and moving down the road to Hewlett, NY

From Five Towns Fencing Club's website: "The goal of the Five Towns Fencers Club revolves around the experiences of Jonathan Tiomkin's fencing career and how a positive attitude and a strong work ethic will directly influence the accelerated growth of the individual fencer.

At Five Towns Fencers Club, all different types of people come together to train in the sport of fencing. Every person that steps through the door has his own unique blend of attributes. The club strives to make those traits manifest into their own personal fencing style.

The goal is to encourage each person to use their own strengths to fight for victory on the fencing strip."

My son has been fencing with Jon at the club since it opened on Broadway 5 years ago. Had you asked me then about fencing - I would have been clueless, and in many ways I still am about the sport. But over those 5 years my son has become an excellent fencer and an excellent sportsman - and I contribute this to Jon.

It was great having my son learn from one of the best. Jon competed in Foil in the 2004 Olympics. He brings his vast experience to all his Five Towns students.

Jon is a coach who genuinely cares about his students. He wants the club to be a place they can come and hang out in even if they are not fencing that day. He would rather his students hang out there than on the street.

If you are looking for something different for your children to do - Fencing is a wonderful sport, and you could not ask for a better coach.

The new club at 15 Prospect Avenue, Hewlett Long island, NY is more than double the size of the Woodmere club. He will have 6 strips instead of 2, which will enable him to hold tournaments, something he could not do in the Woodmere Club.

Alfies II of Hewlett just opened at the site of the old Broadway Pizza at 1243 Broadway in Hewlett. The new owner redid the entire place with wonderful tile floors, wonderful organic  rustic tile walls and 2 flat screen TVs on the walls.

Since I didn't get home until late from showing homes tonight we thought we would give it a try - and all I can say is YUM!

We walked in and the smells were great - garlic, tomato, fresh dough - it was all so inviting.

The owner is Luigi, a second generation Pizzeria owner. He learned his skills working with his father at his shop in Kew Gardens. A photo of his father's original shop from the 1970s in hanging on the wall. He named his Pizzeria Alfie's 2 in honor of his father.

When we ordered the Luigi Panini he was so excited - it was his specialty. He warned us that it was HUGE and he was right. It was at least 10" square - nice crispy bread, moist juicy chicken cutlet, broccoli rabe, melted mozzarella cheese and garlic. It was absolutely great and with a salad more than enough for two of us.

The Antipasto salad was loaded with chunks of cheese, salami and pickled vegetables on a bed of your choice of lettuce. The garlic knots were large and crispy, delicious.

The menu has a large variety of pizzas, salads, wraps and paninis.

And oh - I forgot to mention dessert!! Be sure to get the Zeppolone. It was a Zeppole filled with cannoli cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce and then topped with powdered sugar. It was light and creamy and out of this world good. Unfortunately we ate it too fast to take any pictures of it.

Join NCJW in their SECOND ANNUAL 5K Fitness Walk
to support the health and well being of our community's children

Sunday, May 16th, 2010 - 8:00 AM

Walk with NCJW to get fit, have fun, and support a great cause. Our goal is to inspire members of the Five Towns community and surrounding areas to get into better shape this spring.

NCJW's 5K Fitness Walk is open to the entire community. Women, men, and children are encouraged to participate.  The $20 advance registration fee ($25 after May 5) will help NCJW continue to provide more than 26 services to our community including support of the Five Towns Childcare Center and Senior Center, as well as the Campership Program.  Seniors over 65 pay only $18 and children are $15. T-shirts will be distributed to the first 250 participants.

Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the walk
