The Five Towns on Long Island - Cedarhurst, NY  (Town 4 of 5)

The Five Towns is an informal grouping of towns located in Nassau County, NY on the South Shore of Long Island. The Five Towns is normally considered to be made up of: Lawrence, Cedarhurst, Woodmere (and Woodsburgh), Inwood and Hewlett (Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Neck, Hewlett Harbor).

The name "Five Towns" dates back to 1931, when individual Community Chest groups in the area banded together to form the "Five Towns Community Chest".

The Five Towns area is a great area to live work and play.

• It is convenient to New York City - less than 45 minutes from most towns via the LIRR (Long Island Railroad)
• Located on the South Shore of Long Island we are minutes from  the soft sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.
•  Just over 2 hours from skiing in New York's Catskill Mountains and New Jersey.
• Many discount and retail shopping areas.
• Wide varieties of restaurants and other eateries
• Many local parks, pools and golf courses.
• Choice of many different school districts depending on your needs.

I will detail a different town every day. Today I am going to focus on Cedarhurst.

Cedarhurst is located on the South Shore of Long Island, about 15 minutes from JFK Airport. It is easily accessible by car, bus and the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), stopping right in the heart of town.

The Village of Cedarhurst presents a unique and charming combination of specialty stores, boutiques and national chain stores. A variety of restaurants and cafés all within walking distance of each other complement this quaint town.

Cedarhurst is a charming, clean and attractive Long Island suburban village that has been known as the fashion center of Long Island's South Shore for over 90 years. Enjoy a pleasant stroll along Central Avenue and the immediate side streets and you will see over 200 shops within a four block area. Most of the stores are independent specialty shops featuring famous brand and designer names for women, men and children. Other shops offer furniture and interior design services, jewelry, lush carpets and rugs, fine linens, toys and office supplies. There are several independently owned optical stores featuring the finest in designer frames and professional service. You'll also see well known chain stores such as Banana Republic, Armani, the GAP, and Williams-Sonoma to mention a few. You'll find many places for a quick snack and more elegant restaurants for a satisfying lunch or dinner. Cedarhurst is truly a shopper's paradise.

Cedarhurst is also home to a large variety of Kosher restaurants and supermarkets. The largest of which is Gourmet Glatt located on Spruce Street.

Many stores are open 7 days a week from 10:00am - 6:00pm, with Wednesday late hours until 9:00pm. On Saturdays and Sundays, free meter parking is offered in convenient municipal parking lots

Cedarhurst Village Park is an award winning park and center for cultural and community events

Cedarhurst uses the schools and facilities of Lawrence School District 15.

ABSOLUTELY NO GLASS BOTTLES, JARS OR CONTAINERS SHOULD BE PLACED IN YELLOW RECYCLABLES CONTAINERS

RECYCLABLES WILL NOT BE COLLECTED IF MIXED WITH GARBAGE

MATERIALS TO BE RECYCLED:ALUMINUM AND METAL CONTAINERS: All cans, aluminum foil and pans must be placed in the YELLOW RECYCLABLES-ONLY container.

  PLASTIC BOTTLES AND CONTAINERS: All acceptable plastic materials go into the YELLOW RECYCLABLES-ONLY container. All plastic containers with a recycling triangle on the bottom are acceptable.
