Woodmere, LI, NY is located on the South Shore of Long Island, about 20 minutes from JFK Airport. It is easily accessible by car, bus and the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). It is the largest community in the 5 Towns, covering 2.6 square miles, and is also the most populous with approx 16,000 residents. It is an unincorporated area in the Five Towns and is governed by the Town of Hempstead. The smaller southern portion of Woodmere, known as Woodsburgh, is an incorporated village. It has one of the highest median incomes on LI.

In my opinion the Old Woodmere area is the most interesting part of Woodmere. The houses in Old Woodmere are exactly that, older. Many of the homes were built as early as 1900. There is a variety of Tudors, Colonials and Dutch Colonials. Many are built of brick and the original cement stucco. Every houses is different, every house has its own charm and character.

They don't make homes like these anymore. High ceilings with detail moldings, hardwood floors throughout, plaster walls and lots of Old World charm. It is a residential neighborhood with little to no commercial properties. Big old trees abound.

Old Woodmere bordered by Woodsburgh, Hewlett Neck, Hewlett Harbor and Hewlett Bay Park. Old Woodmere is within walking distance of the Woodmere shopping area along Broadway. It includes a large variety of stores, Woodmere Bowling, dining, nail salons and more. The recently redone Hewlett Woodmere Public Library is also located on Broadway, across from Trinity Church

Old Woodmere is located in the Hewlett Woodmere Public School system - School District 14. The children attend FECC (Franklin Early Childhood Center) for Pre=K, K and 1^st grade. Then it's off to Hewlett Elementary School, Woodmere Middle School and then GW Hewlett High School.

Typically homes in Old Woodmere start in the $ 500,000's but there are fixer uppers that can be had for less.

Gibson is a small neighborhood in Valley Stream that borders Lynbrook and Hewett. It consists of older Tudors and Colonials, and some newer Capes on the outskirts. What makes it unique is that it is the only part of the Incorporated Village of Valley Stream to use the Hewlett Woodmere Public Schools (School District 14). (Except for a small part of North Woodmere, but that is called North Woodmere, not Valley Stream)

Gibson is on the Far Rockaway Line of the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) and an easy commute to New York City. It is near Green Acres Mall and Grant Park. It also contains it's own park called Barret Park.

The older homes in Gibson, the tudors and colonials were built starting in the 1920s. The capes followed in the 1950s. Most of the homes are detached, though there are some attached homes near the LIRR Railroad station. There are also some spacious co-ops available on Dubois Avenue near the Gibson LIRR Station.

In the 1920s, William Gibson and his Gibson Corporation began building in Valley Stream to accommodate New Yorkers who wanted to get out of the crowded city.

The development of the Long Island Railroad and Sunrise Highway (a major thoroughfare through all Long Island)  made Valley Stream an easy commute to The City.

While I was looking into the history of Gibson, I found this:

According to Howard F. Ruehl in his History of Valley Stream, published for the village's fiftieth anniversary in 1975:

"Almost all of the families included at least one commuter. Realizing that his community needed transportation, Mr. Gibson planned a railroad station. After several years of legal negotiations, the Long Island Railroad agreed to have trains stop morning and night at Gibson, if the builder would erect his own station. This was done at a cost of $55,000 and on May 29, 1929, the new building was
officially opened. ..."

"Gibson awarded prizes for the most-beautiful and best-kept gardens and lawns. He started the custom of carol-singing around a Christmas tree at the Gibson Station, provided the Santa Claus, and bought candy for all the children who attended. ...In a whimsical mood, he named some of the new streets after well-known liquors: Haig Road, DuBonnet Road, Carstairs Road, Gordon Road and Wilson Road."

Homes in Gibson start in the $ 300,000s and go up from there. It is a great residential community, and an affordable way to get into the Hewlett Woodmere Public Schools.

•         Picnic areas
•         9 hole golf course
•         Driving range

So pack up your picnic lunches, pile the kids in the car and GO TO THE PARK!!!

SPRING had come to Woodmere, NY and the rest of the Five Towns Long Island

It seemed like winter lasted forever. 3 HUGE snow storms and the Nor-easter last week that wreaked havoc and left people without electric and heat for days on end.

My house began to twitch..... Quite a windstorm in the Five Towns of Long island

We had quite the coastal storm here yesterday.

Rain and wind gusts up to 70 mph.

JFK International Airport was closed.

Many many people are still without power.

Trees and powerlines down all over the neighborhood. Roofs partially blown off. Fences blown down.

All last night it sounded like a war zone - constantly hearing the sirens from police cars and other emergency vehicles.

Just sitting in my house (with my stash of flashlight and candles)  watching the winds trees blow all around was quite scary. Fortunately our power stayed on.

As of now there are still plenty of people without power and or cable and still lots of road closures.

Luckily no fatalitys and that is something to be thankful for.
